So Walter Matthau made a very successful career playing slightly curmudgeonly but reasonably endearing older (or old) men. Here, directed by his close friend Jack Lemmon, he is cast as a much older man who is a bit curmudgeonly and (eventually) reasonably endearing old man. So really a risky casting decision.
